Here are some key facts about a learner’s license:
- Issuance: Your learner’s license is issued immediately after passing the written test.
- Age Requirements:
- For a motorcycle under 125cc, you must be 16 years or older.
- For a motorcycle over 125cc, you must be 18 years or older.
- For a motor vehicle, you must be 17 years or older.
- Validity: A learner’s license is valid for 24 months from the date of issue and cannot be extended.
- Categories of Learner’s Licenses:
- Code 8: For motorcycles, motor tricycles, or quadricycles.
- Code 10: For motor vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) under 3,500kg, including minibuses, buses, and goods vehicles.

When you want to apply for the learner licence, make sure you have the following:
- Completed LL1 Form: Fill out the Application for Learner’s Licence, which you can find online or at your local DLTC.
- Medical Certificate (if 65 or older): If you’re 65 or older, you’ll also need to complete a Medical Certificate (MC) form, available online or at the DLTC.
- Eye Test: You can either have your eye test done at the DLTC or by a qualified optometrist. If you choose the letter, bring the completed form to the testing centre. However, be aware that some DLTCs may still require you to take the eye test on-site.
- ID Photos: Bring two identical ID photographs.

If the account isn’t in your name, the account holder must write an affidavit stating that you live at that address, and the utility bill should be attached, If you live in an informal settlement, bring a letter with an official date stamp from your ward councillor or PTO from Chief confirming your address.
After completing your booking and paying the fee, you’ll receive a receipt from the cashier. Keep this receipt as you’ll need it when you go for your test. Once your application is submitted and the fee is paid, the NaTIS booking system will assign you a date for your test. All relevant information will be included on your appointment sheet.
